Precinct Chairs Successfully Walk Door-To-Door; Yard Signs Out
How do Gregg County Precinct Chairs Steve Richardson and Tom Hoffman turn out the vote in their precincts? Returning to the old-fashioned, tried-and-true ways, they walk their precincts on Saturdays and knock on the doors of their neighbors. It has turned out to be a very effective method for the two Precinct Chairs to reach potential voters.
Steve Richardson, Precinct 8 Chair reported, "I discovered an astonishing number of Democrats out there just waiting for someone to bring them a yard sign or a list of candidates to support."
Tom Hoffman, Precinct 9 Chair was amazed at the number of people requesting Max Sandlin signs. "There are Democrats out there we didn't even know about," said Hoffman
"One of the first doors I knocked on," said Richardson, "was a woman who had just moved here and I registered her to vote." He expressed concern that there are others out there who need to be registered to vote before the deadline on October 4. "We need to get them registered before the deadline."
Hoffman and Richardson said they started out just identifying Democrats to call on, but then started on blocks going to all houses. They said they found just as many Democrats that way, and the folks were glad to get a yard sign for Congressman Max Sandlin.
Each precinct chair reported that the door-to-door walking was actually a lot of fun and made them feel connected to their neighbors.
Tom Hoffman designed and printed a "door hanger" to hand out or leave on a door knob, which includes the names of Democratic candidates and voting information. The one-third page size flyer printed on both sides includes the dates, times, and locations of early voting places and the place and time of the General Election on November 2. The voting locations listed are for the precincts they walk.
Steve Richardson, a deputized voter registrar, carried his voting registration materials with him to register new voters. Now that is curbside service!
Both Tom Hoffman and Steve Richardson hold precinct meetings Thursday nights at 7pm to plan the walking for the following Saturday. Coffee and cake is served at the precinct meetings and interested persons are encouraged to attend. Call 759-5555 for more information about the precinct meetings.
Photographs of the yards with Max Sandlin signs put out Saturday by Precinct 8 Chair Steve Richardson and Precinct 9 Chair Tom Hoffman can be viewed online at the Gregg County Democratic Party's web page at www.GreggCountyChair.com.
